Why Do Dogs Eat Grass is one of the most common questions asked by dog owners!  It seems like a very strange thing for a meat-loving puppy to do.  There are a few potential reasons for dogs eating grass, including:

An upset stomach

Dogs can experience an upset stomach from time to time.  Gastrointestinal problems can be caused by many issues, including eating too fast, experiencing anxiety, changing diet, or having a stomach bug.  Perhaps your dog ate something they weren’t meant to from the trash!

Your dog may start eating grass to induce vomiting or to relieve the symptoms they are experiencing.  While it is a perfectly normal course of action from your dog, keep an eye on them to make sure it is not something more serious.  If they are still eating grass the next day or vomiting a lot (more than a couple of times), take them to the vet immediately.

Some of the symptoms that dogs with an upset stomach will experience include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Excessive gas
  • Diarhea
  • Audible gurgling noise from their stomach

A diet lacking certain nutrients

Ideally, the food that you purchase for your dog should contain all of the nutrients they require.  However, some dog foods don’t contain important micronutrients that a dog’s body needs.  Your dog might turn to grass to obtain those micronutrients!

If they are constantly eating grass, you may need to change to a higher-quality dog food or add some  nutritious foods to their daily meal.  For example, I sometimes give my pugs a boiled egg or some oily fish in addition to their wet food.  Both eggs and fish are high in healthy fats and important micronutrients.

Some dogs will also eat grass to obtain additional fibre in their diet.  Many dog owners report that adding more fibre to their puppies meals completely stopped their grass eating.

Your dog may have intestinal parasites

Intestinal parasites are very common in dogs.  They include hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms and whipworms.  They will attach themselves to your dog’s intestines and feed off the food that your dog eats.  Unfortunately, this will reduce the nutrients that your dog obtains from their food — forcing them to eat grass in an effort to find more nutrition.  You should always use a high-quality dog worming product to prevent intestinal parasites.

Some dogs love the taste of grass!

They just love the taste

Some dogs have a weird grass fetish!  They enjoy foraging through the grass and eating a few leaves here and there.  If your dog is still eating grass despite being healthy and well-fed, then he/she might just be a grass-eating weirdo.

When grass eating can be dangerous

If your dog is a lifelong grass eater, you will have to be very careful about the kinds of pesticides and herbicides you use in your yard.  For example, placing snail bait in your yard could be deadly for a grass eating dog who decides to eat a few pellets along the way. Grass fertilisers can also be deadly if your dog consumes a sufficient amount.  If you need to use a chemical treatment in your yard, keep your dog away for as long as possible.
